He's just hitting the different parts of the triad of the G chord... Look up some basic music theory and honky tonk piano -- it's written all over the place there, and it's a very common rock piano, and certainly a common ELTON, lick.

You can't compare Elton John to Oscar Peterson....two very different people two very different genres of music. 9 times out of 10 oscar is strictly piano playing....plus, Oscar Petersons' hands are about twice the size of Elton John's. Agreed that Oscar Peterson is an amazing artist, but you can't say that Elton John can't play piano.
