The Desert Sons sing "50 Years Ago" written by Ian Tyson.

John ("Buck") Ryberg (rhythm guitar and lead vocalist) and Benny Young (fiddle) have been together in this group for about 20 years.

This video features Bill Ronstadt on upright bass and Bill Ganz on lead guitar. Both have left the Desert Sons, and both live in Tucson and are still active musicians in many capacities.

  • Good on you guys! This always reminds me of my Dad.

  • A nice version. Few write of the life of the modern cowboy like Ian.

  • I really enjoyed your version of this great song-Thanks

  • "Buck" and Charlotte (Juanita) were reunited after 48 years this last January. They had been sweethearts as kids in the High Sierra's where the pine trees sigh in the wind. They still are "sweethearts" today. Just as the character, "Fiona", tells "Tommy in, "Brigadoon": "Loneliness is not being in love in vain, it's not being in love at all". "Buck" says that he was never lonely whenever he thought of Charlotte and that he's always: "Liked her a lot" for more than "Fifty Years" & he always will.
