  • The music is a great part of this film, which you may not even notice until it's pointed out! A great score by Sir Malcolm Arnold.

  • BBC North West visited Downham last week for the 50th Anniversary of Whistle Down The Wind.

ALAN BARNES - who played the young lad - spoke about his recollections. He lives in Longridge now.

Hayley is slightly older than me. When I saw the film in 1961 I became desperately in LOVE with Hayley. I joined her FAN CLUB off London Rd in LIVERPOOL. I have lost the postcard size B&W fanclub photo but my memories of this amazing film live with me. PLUS I've got it on tape !!!!!

  • Thank you. I love this film. This was the first film I saw in a cinema. I was six years old and accompanied by my little sister. My mother was an usherette at the Chelmsford Odeon so we got in for nothing! I wonder which film made in the last ten years could compare in the sensitive and humorous telling of childhood innocence, imagination and trust. If faith and spirituality are dead or forbidden, I suppose we´ll have to rely on Dawkins and Hawking! That´ll be a barrel of laughs.

  • A great movie

  • That girl who played Nan was actually amazing in this film! I'm so surprised she didn't go on to do anything else, she was so talented!

  • @georgibrew

I was at the reunion in Downham village hall too,and met 9 of the 'kids' who were in the film. What a great day,and they are all still so proud of being in such a wonderful film.

  • Remeber the filming in Bacup, seem like only yesterday, time flies. Played some music on radio Lancashire & told the story recently. Still a great film

  • just been to the 50th anniversary of the film in Downham, Lancashire today and met of few of the child stars!

  • @BruceWayne1958 In my eyes having no belief in a particular creator of all living things makes everything to me worthless. If there is no God, theres no sense of right and wrong, wot does anything matter if there is no God?? I myself dont actually follow and particular religion, but I do firmly believe in God. I think the problems we face and the way the world is today is alot to do with the fact people dont hav any faith or belief now.

  • @RaikenXion For me a start would be with a rejection of consumerism - it's the elephant in the room when it comes to western values becoming more atomised and fractured. Perhaps the present financial crisis might be the beginning of the end of us placing endless economic growth and the stimulation of consumption on the high altar of political priority. We have to live on a human scale again. For me, the idea of an afterlife devalues this one. The idea of a god takes away our own responsibility.
