i've just bought a cage off ebay and intend to get some gerbils this weekend... wish i'd bought a tank of some sort now! it's great to see how they burrow, must be so much more natural for them, they seem to love it! Will see how mine get on in a cage and may look at a tank later on! love the vid :)

whats compost?

It's kind of like soil, it comes in bags from the garden centre and you put it in plant pots.
Might replace it with sandpit sand next time though. The tank dries out and turns all dusty. The dust goes *everywhere*

I made it out of a fishtank. It's filled with a mixture of compost and woodshavings.
Best not to fill it more than 1/4 deep with the filling, they dig it out a lot and it piles up. This means the lid has to be escape proof. I learnt that gerbils will happily spend hours chewing away at a plastic lid until it is large enough to get out of.
Now there is a wire mesh lid so the new occupants can't escape.
