Game #20: vs. SM NW (hit the "Show more" button below)
November 6, 2009
WASHBURN RURAL 3 SM NORTHWEST 1
For the 7th time in school history, Washburn Rural would participate in the semi-finals of the Class 6A state tournament in a rematch with the Cougars of Shawnee Mission Northwest. In early October, Rural had defeated Northwest 1-0 but the Cougars had won seven of eight games since that loss and had upset both Olathe East and Olathe South in the playoffs. The second meeting between the two schools would start in a similar fashion for the Junior Blues when they grabbed a quick 1-0 lead just five minutes into the contest. Senior Nick Golden was able to give Rural the early advantage when he volleyed a shot into the back of the net. The goal was set up when Ethan Speake won a header in the middle of the field that gave Golden his opportunity to score. Up 1-0, Rural was able to add to their lead less than 10 minutes later when the Junior Blues earned back to back corner kicks. The first corner would be headed away by the Cougars, but the second corner would give Rural a 2-0 lead just 15 minutes into the game. Anthony Schmiedeler bent a corner to the near post that was flicked by Grant Copeland past a Northwest defender and into the goal. Down 2-0, Northwest cranked up the pressure and 14 minutes before halftime cut the lead in half on a corner kick that was redirected past goalkeeper Justin Ives. Rural had one more chance before halftime on a nice shot from Copeland, but Northwest's keeper deflected the ball wide. In the second half, despite going into a strong wind, Rural was able to limit any quality offensive chances from Northwest. In turn, Rural put pressure on the Cougars and with 15 minutes remaining scored another goal that would put the game away. Speake took a throw-in in front of Rural's bench and launched the ball into the middle of the box where it was eventually headed past the keeper by Harrison Petrik. The goal gave Rural a 3-1 lead and the Junior Blues were in complete control of the contest. Over the last 15 minutes, Northwest had a few opportunities but every one of them was turned away by Ives and the defense. When the game ended, Rural had advanced the championship game for only the second time in school history! Next up, Rural will take on Lawrence Free State (who defeated Dodge City 2-0 in the other semi-final) in the Class 6A championship game tomorrow at 2:00 pm!
