Unknown alien creature or insect leave bizarre pattern in moss

Greetings! Please leave a comment - I would love to hear your guidance or speculations.
I noticed these unusual patterns in dried moss, and have no idea what causes theme. I assume it is some kind of insect. It resembles a long serpentine ribbon with a saw-tooth edge.
The fence is white, and the dark green areas are the dried moss, and the lines made by the unknown creature expose the white of the fence beneath the moss.
Some of the patterns are quite tightly arranged, consuming over 90% of the moss in a particular area, and others are quite loose in comparison. All of the lines can be traced to a particular starting (or ending?) point.

Please comment if you know what causes this, and any pertinent details.
