I shot this video to honor and chronicle my solo road trip, a pilgrimage of sorts, that I made to go see Shelby Lynne perform songs from her new cd, Revelation Road. I traveled from my home in South Florida, North on the Florida Turnpike and then West across the entire state of Florida to Clearwater.

For a good part of the trip you are riding through cow country with nothing but 18 wheelers everywhere and farms on either side. The roads in Florida are flatter than flat with a constant, majestic view of the sky and it feels like you can see for miles and miles.

Needless to say there were many revelations along the way.

And after missing the final exit and being lost in rush hour traffic for a solid hour, I finally arrived a bit road weary and flustered, at my destination: The Capitol Theater, Clearwater, Florida.

Revelation #1 -- The theater manager announced that there would be absolutely NO recording devices or cameras allowed during the show.

And I thought to myself "HA! Are you telling me that after a somewhat grueling 6 hour car ride to get to this lousy theater, (and a $60 ticket price) you are not going to let me take a stinkin' picture? Who are you kidding mister? Everyone knows that Shelby's concert videos are plastered all over Facebook and YouTube. You can kiss my Shelby lovin' butt!"

That was my internal monologue as I lovingly stroked the little black camera that sat hidden in a tiny, barely visible camera case, at my waist. "Over my dead body!" I thought.

As it turned out I was sitting in an aisle seat -- probably not the best set up to secretly videotape the entire concert - - but I thought, well I'm just going to have to bend this rule just a tad, to satisfy my lust for all things Shelvis.

The lights went down and Shelby finally sashayed up to the microphone with classic understated ease as the crowd went totally nuts, with people yelling out "Shelby We Love You!" from every side of the theater.

And Shelby's eyes spoke volumes with her expression totally unfazed as if to say "What is the big fuckin' deal?" She strapped on her guitar and began to sing and you could hear a pin drop at that moment.

About 15 minutes into the show, I began to get antsy to begin producing some actual evidence that I was actually live and in attendance at this show! I mean really . . . . was I going to have traveled 500 miles round trip to attend this show, without producing any actual record of the show? No way!

I slid my little black camera out of it's case. I raised the camera to face level. I turned on the camera. I saw Shelby through the viewer as clear as can be. She was singing Revelation Road. This was a historical moment! I hit record. . . . . At approximately 20 seconds into the first verse I felt a very jolting hand tapping me hard on my right shoulder and I look up to see this very short, white haired, 90 year old guy (the theater usher) and he looks at me scoldingly and says in a monotone: "No cameras allowed."

"Oops . . . . " My head shrinks 2 feet into my neck and I look the old man in the eye and with all the confidence I can muster I say, "Pardon me if I forget what I've already been told. You can't hold that against me, man. I'm on Revelation Road!

And the usher proceeded to disappear in a puff of smoke . . . and the rest is history!
