Lake Toba is the largest volcanic lake in the world, created by a massive eruption some 75,000 years ago. The lake is 100m long and 30m wide, situated inland on Sumatra island, at an altitude of 900m (2,953 ft). It is believed that the eruption at that time caused major climate changes to the world and catastrophic losses to human lives. In the middle of the lake is Samosir Island. It was once the peak of the volcanic mountain, prior to the eruption. When the eruption occurred, the peak was blown off and settled in the middle of the crater (now lake) to form an island.
