Dr. Magnus Pyke on the different branches of science:
"If it squirms, it’s biology; if it stinks, it’s chemistry; if it doesn’t work, it’s physics; and if you can’t understand it, it’s mathematics."

@zytigon Thought they might be of interest, by way of giving a fuller picture. I have always disliked the idea that Christians are simply expert at "believing what you know ain't so" and warmed to people who try to make some sense out of it from a philosophical point of view. Darwin was of course a Christian himself - Origin of Species predates by a year Essays and Reviews, about which you should be able to find out more online though it is now very ancient!

@julesthemadman Thanks for that, I had a look through the reviews on Amazon about those books. Amazing all the different perspectives people have. I'm reading Darwins, ' On the origin of species' , quite a good read. Richard Dawkins, ' The ancestors tale ' is super. I've just bought ' Unweaving the rainbow ', looking forward to getting into that.

@zytigon For a modern slant on religion and spirituality I would add John Robinson HONEST TO GOD, Don Cupitt ABOVE US ONLY SKY and Anthony Freeman's GOD IN US. Pardon me for butting in - these are not evangelical texts but speculative, accessible works of theology.

For a scientific view of religion try Robert M. Price, ' The reason driven life ' & ' The DaVinci fraud', Victor J. Stenger, Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, PZ Meyers, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, Michael Shermer; skeptics society, Peter Atkins, John W. Loftus, Dan Barker, Valerie Tarico, Truth-savescom, skepticsannotatedbible for Koran & Book of Mormon, talkorigins, wisdomcommons, mindvendorcom. 1500BCE papyrus of ani , David Mills, Bart Ehrman, Joseph Wheless

Magnus Pike was a slightly more eccentric version of Mr Wizard for my fellow Yanks who weren't aware of him.
