Overcoming My Past
Crossroads -- Part 1
August 3, 2008 ~ 2 Samuel 12:1-7

"For when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed."
Acts 13:36

God..."raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, 'I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will." Acts 13:22 (NKJV)

"When Uriah's wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him. After the time of mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing David had done displeased the LORD." 2 Samuel 11:26-27

2 Samuel 12:1-7a
"The LORD sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, "There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him. "Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him." David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, "As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die! He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity." Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man!"

How Do I Over come My Past?

1. Be Honest About My Current Situation.
"Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night. Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just."
Psalm 51:1-4 (NLT)

2. Ask God To Bring Restoration.
"Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me—now let me rejoice. Don't keep looking at my sins. Remove the stain of my guilt. Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence, and don't take your Holy Spirit from me." Psalm 51:7-11 (NLT)

"Give your burdens to the LORD, and He will take care of you." Psalm 55:22a (NLT)

3. Own My Part And Forgive The Rest.
"Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves; then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness." Psalm 51:14 (NLT)

"Never pay back evil for evil to anyone...never avenge yourselves. Leave that to God. For it is written, "I will take vengeance; I will repay those who deserve it," says the Lord." Romans 12:17a&19 (NLT)

Speaking of Christ..."When they hurled their insults at Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats. Instead, He entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly." 1 Peter 2:23 (LB)

4. Start Focusing On The Future.
"Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you." Psalm 51:12 (NLT)

"Dear brothers and sisters, I am still not all I should be, but I am
focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the
end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us up to heaven." Philippians 3:13-14 (NLT)

5. Pass On What I've Learned To Others.
"Then I will teach your ways to rebels, and they will return to you. You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering. The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God. Psalm 51:13, 16-17 (NLT)

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your
bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your
spiritual act of worship." Romans 12:1 (NIV)

  • Thanks for you honesty! I would say that you can't force yourself to forgive, but we can ask God to help give us both the strength and willingness to forgive. Why? Because God expects us to forgive, as HE has forgiven us. Hope this encourages you my brother.
