People are going on about battle tactics etc....I know my stuff about this. Well, basically Tolkien was writing a fantasy, a mythology drawn from real world myths and legends. This takes priority over our real world logistics and realism sensitivity. People need to realise, look, its less about the stats and tactics, and more about the moral of the story, the heroism and the beauty of the legendarium. Besides, historically cavalry charges EXCEEDING the scale of this have won the day comfortably.

@hippydude89 Only one British brigade of cavalry of the Crimean War, famously losing a third of its number in its gallant but unwise charge into cross cannon fire and head on cannon fire. About 600 odd men or something. But still, look at the British cavalry charge at the Battle of Amiens - in WW1 ! 20,000 :D
