In this 1991 interview, former school teacher John Taylor Gatto talks about the difference between "schooling" through public schools and true education. What really matters? Does "Schooling" as we know it today create whole human beings?

I hope that you find this interview as inspiring and informative as I did.

  • Why didn't someone tell me about this guy when i was 10? I am now 17, and even though i have been fairly "successful" in school, i always felt like i was wasting my time going to school. But the fact is, i have to go to school, because in order to get a job, i need formalized education (which really doesn't mean anything). So in order to be "succesful" today, you have to waste the most exciting part of your life by going to school. Oh, well... Life is crazy these days.

  • @madmax200769 I think you're right my friend.

  • @cas343 That's a lot of money to spend on acquiring something which will have value for 5 years at the most.

The only way to sustain value in this investment will be either spend it entering corporate training or get on the education treadmill all the way to professorship.

  • I'm spending about $150,000 on university right now. Suddenly I feel like skipping class.

  • Mr.Gatto is so right on about allowing all students to participate in discussion & allow them to practice in expressing themselves in front of others. I've read that parents only talk to their kids when they're doing something wrong or to redirect them on a task. No real discussion with them. No wonder they talk so much in the classroom. As teachers we need to listen & ask the student ques on what they're discussing & allow all students a chance to practice vocal/social skills. Thanks & Peace.

  • @Effreno

oh i am sooo most definitly home schooling my child. they are going to learn true knowledge as well as how to be self sufficient. things im still struggling to learn after over two decades of schooling

  • I'm going to say thank you on behalf of your daughter. Don't feel ashamed about not acting sooner- most parents have been duped into accepting the school system and most never wisen up.
