@woodenmajor the same argument can be said for all religions though. you're making a theological argument and using it to based in socio-political organizations. the fact remains dozens of islamic societies have existed throughout history which were not any more or less devastating to gays that christian, shinto, confucian, jewish, or zoroastrian societies, to name just a handful of religions. (note: there are native N. Am societies which were not devastating to gays)

as to your other point about his shilling for the expansion of sharia doctrine in the west, again, no he is not. he doesn't think muslims should be singled out and repressed. he thinks they have religious freedom the same as you. he is NOT a proponent of sharia, nor has he ever been, nor is any liberal or progressive of whom i am aware.

@woodenmajor furthermore, as someone who actually knows arabic, studies islamic history, muslim identity, the quran, hadith, and sharia I'm happy to say that your fear about sharia itself is misguided. sharia is simply "islamic law", which is, as are all laws, dependent on social convention and jurisprudential interpretation. there is no reason to think that "sharia" is uniformly anti-gay... anymore than to think the US constitution is uniformly anti-gay.

@woodenmajor it is also redundant to use the word "main stream" to describe the word "orthodoxy"... as the orthodox is by definition the generally accepted convention. However, it is anachronistic (slightly) to apply the term "orthodoxy" to Islam, as it was coined mid-16th century to describe a sect of the Christian Church, which is today referred to as the Orthodox Church.
