During the 1950s and 1960s, unidentified flying objects (UFOs) routinely made headlines in newspapers across the United States. According to a study by journalism professor Herbert Strentz, possibly a million or more U.S. newspaper stories had been published about UFOs by 1966. This widespread media coverage clearly displeased government officials who undertook to discourage media and public interest in the phenomenon.
Today, although UFOs continue to be sighted and reported around the world, leading U.S. news organizations rarely treat UFOs as serious news. How did this remarkable change in journalistic emphasis come about?
In his book, The Missing Times, Terry Hansen investigates the extent to which leading news organizations have quietly cooperated with government officials to limit their UFO reporting because of national security concerns. Reviewer John Peterson, writing in the Journal of Scientific Exploration, called The Missing Times possibly the most important book about UFOs in decades. More recently, The Missing Times was cited as the Best UFO Book of 2002 by Britains UFO Magazine.
Terry Hansen holds degrees in biology and science journalism from the University of Minnesota and has worked as a magazine writer and editor for some 20 years. In 1986, he co-founded KFH Publications, a Seattle computer-magazine publishing company. His interest in news media coverage of the UFO controversy stems from research papers written about the subject in graduate school. He has organized and moderated two symposiums about The Science and Politics of UFO Research for the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul. Terry Hansen has also been a guest on numerous local and national broadcast programs including Whitley Striebers Dreamland, Jeff Renses Sightings, and cable TVs History Channel.
