@BeulahLips MLK SR was a Republican. MLK JR was a Democrat, despite disagreements with the party. He was really a Left libertarian.

Blacks were overwhelmingly Republican until FDR came to office, promised programs to help the poor and convinced many that the GOP had not worked hard enough for their interests. It remains true though that the GOP never actively supported racism like Democrats did. President Wilson was extremely racist, and Coolidge a great supporter of racial equality

I agree that it shows greater strength to be nonviolent, because it's much easier to follow the rush of anger than to keeping yourself cool and collected.
