  • Lonnie: The Capital was once known to the West as Canton because the British created and promulgated that name, but the Chinese have ALWAYS called it Guangzhou!

  • Yep, It was the anglicized name for the crown jewel of Canton Province...

  • @lukebccb I hardly ever use the word hate, but I hate Wade-Giles (two British) - their system is NOT phonetic. What the crap is tsim-tsa-tsui, or kow-loon? Native Chinese never said kw@ng-chow, kw@ng-tung, or c@n-ton!

  • GuangZhou>HongKong

  • But Guangzhou is a Cantonese city. So if you want to call it by it's real original name, so you must say: "Gongzau". Like Hong Kong is not Hong Kong but "Heonggong". I always find their original names in Cantonese much more better.

  • @lonniebhodge: It may have been known as "Canton" for the west but in the Wade-Giles spelling (before the adaptation of pinyin) it was known BY THE CHINESE as "Kwangchow" and that "cantonese" was known (as has always been) BY THE CHINESE as "kwangtung hua".

"Canton" was NEVER used by the "cantonese" speakers when referring to the city Chinese/"cantonese".

"Canton" is strictly a western usage.

  • Guang zhou is not that great of a city, lots of thieves and shits...i didn't like it that much when i lived there.

  • @lonniebhodge Surprisingly enough, its not a police state constantly hit with geological disasters and plagued by ethnic/labor riots. No, America's about 10000 times better than China. Have you ever licked hot chocolate from Santa's beard? That's America.

  • @nate91han

    Ha...

    Where is your utopia?

  • @j0n52 Yikes! Does the political oppression appeal to you in some way?

  • I'm a 3rd generation NZ'er but I'm still Chinese 1st and Kiwi 2nd.
