I have shoes to protect my service dog's feet. She is with me all the time and can not necessarily choose to go in the shade or walk across the snow. Dogs in dog teams that work in the snow also wear boots. This prevents ice from building up between the pads and causing frost bite--very painful for the dog. What's worse is city sidewalks often have salt that make all of that worse. Shoes/boots for dogs are not fashion statements--they protect the dog.
We had to buy boots for our dog too because he has arthritis in his feet. The snow and ice makes his feet really sore and he was trying to hop on two legs or hold his feet up one at a time. Lots of dogs need boots for different reasons!
Very tiny dogs have to wear a sweater, if it gets realy cold, because of the short distance between the dog and the cold groud. That's okay. But c'mon boots???
Where do you live, that you have to be so afraid of broken glass lying around? How often does that happen??? And even dogs living in hot states like Florida or Texas don't have problems with the hot ground.
I have a dog my own, he NEVER wears boots and you know what? He never burnt his feet and he never had problems in winter. How do you think do wolves survive in the wilderness? Do they go to the next forest-boutique?
The boots aren't meant to be cute or amusing! Would you rather his feet burn on hot sidewalk or him step on broken glass and have to get surgery on his paw? The boots help the dog, not hurt him. But they do look silly, and that's why it's on here.

Why does a dog have to wear boots???
It`s so sad that people dress their dogs only for amusement, without considering the needs and well-being of their animal.
Poor dog, he can`t even walk properly in his "cute boots"
