Solders Joy played on a C/G Anglo concertina.
I got this tune, more than 20 years ago, from fiddle player Flos Headford, when I recorded his playing in a workshop (he was not supposed to be playing this tune, but he did, and Paul Burgess joined in!).
A couple of years later, I recall playing this tune at the end of one of the "late" sessions at the Balfour, Sidmouth. Flos Headford and Lisa Sture on fiddles, myself on Anglo. At 1.30 am, it sounded wonderful!
Other than Flos saying that it was an Appalachian tune, and Dave Townsend saying that it was not "Soldiers Joy" (as we know it in the UK), I have no knowledge of this tune, and have not heard it played by anyone else.
It fits nicely on a C/G Anglo with 30 or more buttons. I have 36 on this concertina, and make use of the C# on different buttons for push/draw. Early on in the "A" music, the melody drops onto the left hand for about 1 bar, but I move the accompaniment (octave playing) onto the right hand at this point. This is at about 5/6 seconds into the tune.
is it easy to learn it?
