Released about a year before the first Metal Gear, Infiltrator was one of the early stealth games, although the original Castle Wolfenstein (released in 1981) and its sequel, Beyond Castle Wolfenstein (released in 1984) preceded both of these. Player takes the role of Johnny "Jimbo-Baby" McGibbits, a "super-soldier, ace helicopter pilot, ballistics expert, engineer, neurosurgeon, politician, movie actor, rock star, world-class motorcyclist, explorer, karate expert and devil-may-care all round nice guy" (according to manual, that is) who has to infiltrate Mad Leader's bases in three different missions.

Each of these missions consists of using the protagonist's helicopter to reach the destination, completing the ground mission and returning to the home base with the helicopter. The flight sequences use the gameplay similar to flight simulators (although very simplified when compared to actual "hardcore simulators" - even if player doesn't get far without instructions/manual) while the ground missions are closer to arcade-adventures with additional stealth elements.

In flight sequences player has to fly to the location shown in coordinates above the tactical map (shown in the video), which can be entered to the guidance system of the helicopter. After this the guidance system shows both the direction of the location in the cockpit and the place of the location on the tactical map. In addition to this player meets other pilots (allies, enemies and "maniacs"), who can be contacted with communication system. By giving INFILTRATOR as codename for allies and OVERLORD for enemies can the combat be avoided. However, maniacs (described in the manual as "other infiltrator pilots" who have "snapped from the strain") will attack player regardless of the codename. By requesting ID of the other pilots before they ask player's codename player can get the codename of pilot. This can be used to some extent to determine, whether pilot is ally or enemy.

In the ground missions player has to use false papers, sleeping gas and gas grenades to explore the location, find the targets and complete the mission using the additional equipment supplied for mission (camera for photographs and explosives for destroying specific targets). Since the papers are forgeries, sometimes the guards will notice that there is something wrong with them, forcing the player to either use sleeping gas/gas grenade or run for his/her life (although the latter choice causes alarm, turning all guards against the player). Getting the janitor's uniform (the yellow one) makes guards MUCH less likely to pay attention to player (even when alarm is on), although if they do, they won't accept player's papers at all. The impersonation of the enemy guards/soldiers may actually be quite similar to the "pass system" of Beyond Castle Wolfenstein.

Once player completes a mission in the disk version, the progress is automatically saved, allowing player to start the game directly from the next mission even after resetting/turning off the computer/emulator (although beginning the game from earlier missions is still allowed, of course).

Infiltrator received also a sequel called Infiltrator Part II: The Next Day, which was released in 1988. While the NES version was called "Infiltrator", it was actually based on the sequel and not the original game.

UPDATE (27th of March, 2010):
It appears that Infiltrator for NES is not actually just a version of Infiltrator Part II: The Next Day. Rather, it uses elements from both games. For example, the opening cutscene, computer terminal of the chopper and the first mission of the NES installation are based on The Next Day. However, second and third mission are actually from the original Infiltrator.
