Union Pacific's 1995, Chicago & Northwestern Heritage, with the CNW twins hauls mixed freight eastbound through Ames, Ia on 3/27/2007 at 7:58pm. Ames, Ia was the first to have the "crossing horns" installed at there crossings. They also have concrete dividers in the center of the road at all of there crossings (except duff ave.) to prevent people from driving around the gates.

(Sorry about the video quality, i took it on a digital camera)

  • Was this shot on my camera or a GL2?

  • My digital point and shoot in film mode

  • What town/railroad is this on?

  • This is in Ames, Ia (Were Iowa State University is Located) and it is on Union Pacific's Overland Route. This part of the Route used to belong to the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad until UP bought them back in '95

  • The street is Kellogg Ave, but if you go one street west (Clark Ave) there is an old C&NW passenger train station. Though it closed over 40 years ago it is stilled used as a strip mall.

  • yea, my railroading spot in washington got destroyed, (Tacoma) they installed the "X" shit and the fucking-dueschbag-piece of shit on the fuck pole! Fuck you stupid ass people that complain of the fucking horn! It takes out the fun in railfanning and isnt as safe!

And fuck you, UP for installing them!

  • Those are actually part of a railroad quiting and safety project. The project is called Manhattan Project and it is to cut down noise levels from the trains and also provide a safer crossing. According to research data "people are less likely to drive around gates if the hear that the train horn is close". For those of you who hate these you can blame the Ames Lab, Ames Police, Ames Public Works, Iowa Department of Transportation, Union Pacific, and Iowa State for it.

  • I hate those wayside horns with a fiery passion. Great CNW catch and I'm glad UP has chosen not to patch them. I only wish they would do the same for some ex-SP units.

  • Yep, CNW units #8646 and #8701are still in CNW paint and numbers, no patches. And they will remain that way, UP even did some touch-up paint work on those two. They will be donated to a museum when retired.

  • Wow a CNW heritage train! Dont the two CNW twins have their original reporting mark and numbers?

  • Yup. It has been for a while now.

  • I dont know Brian. I dont think its actually UPs fault. Your right about the citizens! I think its all thier fault! I think they shoudve moved if they didnt like it!

  • exactly! the railroad was there first!

  • Those damn boxes... they're all over Lake County, IL too... ain't nothing as good as the real thing. Funny thing - the first time one of those boxes went off it confused me and I slammed on the brakes thinking the gates were broken & I was going to get hit. Scared the crap out of me & the Camaro!!!

  • To me it sounds like a really bad electronic version of a Leslie RS3L.

  • So Ames is a quiet zone now?

  • thats stupid. What is the piont of a loud horn if you cant use it anywhere. I live next to trains that blow horns all the time, i learn to deal with it.
