Some people say that Marnie (Tippi Hedren) is carrying a handbag that seen end-on resembles the external female genitalia. I'm not sure about that, but Hitch was a keen Freudian and he definitely meant the handbag to represent the womb. Watch it "give birth" to all that money!

This clip is also notable for a semi-orgasmic hair-rinsing scene. Classic if perverse romance from the master.

  • The film Marnie wears it's sexuality and psychology very much on its sleeve so when we see Marnie (who we are to believe is frigid) for the first time, with her arms wrapped around a handbag that looks exactly like a vagina, which is then revealed to contain a stash of cash (!!??), is totally in keeping with the films themes.

Hitchcock's Marnie is shockingly misunderstood. It is undervalued and under-rated. It is, in fact, a masterpiece. Love it

  • If only going from black to blond hair were as easy!

I've always loved the hair color change scene here, which evokes Judy's transformation in "Vertigo."

  • @foreo OMG, I never saw that, and I love this movie. There are so many hidden motives and secrets in this movie, you must see it several times, and each time you'll see something new that you missed before. you are right--A Masterpiece!

  • It is a masterpiece. One of my favorite Sean Connery movies as well.

  • Wait, if I think that it looks more like it barfed the money, does that make it a symbol of the digestive system? Shazaam! And so it is...

  • If we’re talking about female external sexual organs then we’re talking about the vulva, including labia minora and majora, mons pubis, clitoris and the vestibules. The vagina is the what you can’t see, the connection between cervix and vulva.

  • @maisonvivante OH! The scene where she looks as though she's stepping out of a dream! SO romantic!

  • i really love marnie.

    so deep and entertaining.

  • One of my favorite Hitchcock's. Miss Hedren is just sublime.

Great hair color change scene - like a rebirth... The scene of the robbery is a masterpiece.

The most sexual and psychological Hitchock's of all. Loves it.

  • OMG! It's true and it is an underrated masterpiece!

  • I don't see the vagina in the yellow handbag lol but I love the style of the bag
