Hogar de Vida para Los Niños Orphanage, Atenas Costa Rica

While on Vacation is Costa Rica, we decided a few months before hand that we would visit a local orphanage while we were there.

Call it Voluntourism!! We've decided each year while on vacation, we should do something for at least one day out of our vacation and do something significant, to make a difference in someones life if possible.

Our choice was the The Hogar de Vida para Los Niños orphanage, which is located outside the rural town of Atenas, Costa Rica—approximately 45 minute from the international airport in Alajuela and an hour west of San Jose, the capital. The home is directed by Children of Promise missionaries, Tim and Dena Stromstad are the wonderful directors of this place.

There are Costa Rican children abandoned in hospitals that needed to be placed in children's homes. Some cases are severe abuse and the children are in need of recuperation from the physical and mental abuse. Those cases are investigated and in some cases the parents disappear and the children recover but have no where to go. This home receives many of children this manner. It is a sad story but they are doing what they can to give these kids love and acceptance.

There wasn't a dry eye on the bus ride back home when we left. We all felt good though knowing that these children are safe and in a loving environment. The smiles on their faces says it all.

i was just in Hogar De vida at the end of july

i went down with my church for ten days

i fell in love with the whole place

the kids were amazing and the tias were such and inspiration

im so glad you made a video of this

and it has a picture of jacksel who was my baby while we were down there so that was awesome

This made me smile...so much.

I worked at Hogar de Vida for a month while I lived in Atenas for the summer. It was so wonderfu...I recognized a couple of the children, but saw many new faces. And of course the Tias and Barb....the amazing, beautiful women that keep a smile on everyone's face.

Hogar de Vida is a very special place...

I'm so glad you guys were able to experience it.
