"We may only be a small island, but Britain's great scientists and inventors have literally created the modern world, from the invention of the steam engine, computers and the world-wide web, to the discovery of the theory of evolution and the atom. In a new five-part series some of Britain's leading scientific figures tell the stories of the people behind these innovations. The first programme begins 350 years ago when a small group of friends, colleagues and rivals defied everything that was known about the world at that time. Stephen Hawking and Jim Al-Khalili explain how Isaac Newton saw mathematics at the root of everything, from gravity to light."

  • @Mxlsptlk No, but I asked the same question when I studied Boyle's law in school :-P. The word "boil" predates Robert Boyle, and ultimately comes to the english language through the Latin "bullīre," meaning "to bubble," by way of old French "boillir" and middle (1250 - 1300) English "boillen" :-)

  • Is this why we say that things boil (Boyle)?

  • Can you imagine being Hooke? A whole undiscovered universe beyond the naked eye. One of the best aspects of humanity is its curiousity and it's desire, at all costs, to discover the truth.

  • Without organised religion humans would have been in space 300 years ago. Useless bronze age superstition has held mankind down for too long.

We have to end superstition before it ends us.

  • This a great video. Thanks for posting. Please share on your Facebook accts. People need to open their eyes. :)

  • inspiring... WOW

  • damn, hooke was a good artists too!

  • Why is it that we choose the disciples over these brilliant scientists? Something went wrong in history.

  • holy crap he can draw good

  • The Royal Society is the ultimate Justice League
