Oh yeah, THAT game. Ugh. I was there in the upper deck, great seats. All I can remember was the idiotic 4th & 1 Mackovic called deep in OU territory. Going for it on 4th &1 wasn't bad, but calling a delayed hand off 5 yards deep? Never understood THAT call - Texas turned it over on downs - what a waste. If he'd gone for the field goal, Texas wins 27-24. One of the few bone headed offensive plays I remember him calling.
I think it started before that. People were starting to notice Texas at least as far back as 1994. Remember when they beat the Tarheels in the Sunbowl on New Years Day (and Mack Brown was NC's coach, ironically). Ricky was a big attention getter, but again it was Mackovic and his offensive scheme that brought RIcky in. Bottom line: John Mackovic saved Texas and built the foundation Mack Brown has tried to cruise on.
Man, I used to love UT. I moved to Austin in '95 and my wife and I went to every home game- used to be able to get $5 'Stampede Zone' tix at the grocery store for the endzone. I was at this game, and I maintain this game was the tuning point that got UT moving up again, if one game can do . It was John Mackovic, not that sleaze Mack Brown, that made Texas a contender again. The next year '96 was 'Roll Left' against Nebraska and the win for the first Big XII Championship! I miss those days!
texaswarhawk, I bought my $5.00 ticket at RANDALLS Grocery & was also in the North endzone. People say Mack Brown is a good recruiter, but what player DOESN'T want to come here?
I know. I bought mine from the old Randalls on Lamar St. that is now a Half Price Books! Fun times! As far as Mack Brown, I think he is still the most overrated, overpaid coach in college football. A stupid defense by USC and Vince Young's raw athleticism on a broken 4th & 14 got them the Natl' Championship - Mack Brown had nothing to do with it. What has he done since? He still gets outcoached and nearly beaten by WAY inferior teams. Mackovic was much better offensive coach.
And I think he brough in, on the whole, the best UT players of the last 20 years. Bryant Westbrook Tony Brackens, James Brown, Shawn Mitchell, Priest Holmes, RIcky WIlliams, Major Applewhite,, Phil Dawson....besides Vince Young, who has Brown recruited to hang his hat on? Cedric Benson? Yuk. If Mackovis had just gotten a killer defensive coordinator, he'd still be at UT and probably have 2 to 3 Championships by now. Just my humble opinion.
He was headed in the wrong direction after the 1997 season and Texas cut ties enough said. Im not even going to say anything about Mackovic winning 2 or 3 titles. I think his career record of 95-83-3 speaks for itself.
Im not going to argue with you saying Texas wasnt down pretty much throughout the 80s and early 90s. He did do a pretty good job recruiting but he had the same problem Fred Akers had he couldn't win the big one. Now Mack has lost some big ones and some that should have been for sure wins but nobody has put together a stretch of consecutive seasons like Mack at Texas.
what the heck are you talking about it was totally ricky williams staying for his senior season to win the heisman that has done so much for recruiting and the rebuilding of the fan base.
