AUGUST 21, 2009 - AUGUST 26, 2009 ---- A 5 night, 6 day backpacking adventure into the South San Juan Wilderness. Located in the Rio Grande National Forest in Southern Colorado. Access to this area is just west outside of the town of Platoro, CO and a couple miles southwest of the Platoro Reservoir. BEST TIME OF YEAR TO HIKE THIS AREA IS JULY OR AUGUST! June may be too early for some because of the snow drifts which make the trails hard to find. The Three Forks Trailhead starts at 10,000 FT and the Conejos Peak summits at 13,172 FT. An excellent 5 night, 6 day high altitide backpacking adventure for the "Moderate" backpacker. There is plenty of water all the way up to Glaciaral Lake. Above the timber line, water is scarce so pump/boil yourself some water before attempting Conejos Peak. So, you're getting rivers, lakes, creeks, trees, high peak summits, vistas, wildlife, and fishing!! It's backpacking paridise!! ----- I rate this backpacking trip 5/5 stars... for being MY most excellent backpacking trip to date so far!! ----- A Kodak Easyshare M1093 IS 720p HD camera was used to capture the video and photography for this production. -=-=-=-=- WANT A DECENT FREE MAP OF THIS AREA?? DOWNLOAD IT FROM HERE: http://www.ouachitamaps.com/picture_library/South%20San%20Juan/South%20San%20...

  • Also, I hiked to Latir Lakes in the Latir wilderness with scouts in the mid 80s and have wanted to return there. Have you ever packed there in N. NM.

  • @dnvnmrgn The Latir Wilderness is beautiful! I have backpacked in there several years ago up to a nice chain of small lakes. I took some photos of the area but this was before I started doing YouTube videos so It's definately a place I will go back to and this time I will film the adventure and share it with you guys. Might be a great trip for 2012.

  • Awesome video of the San Juans! I was in Taos over the 4th and we went and fished the Conejos around Mogote and absolutely love this area. My parents always took me to fish the Rio around S. Fork and Creede when I was growing up. I've been wanting to do some back country fly-fishing for a while and this looks to be a very kick a** place to do this. Where do you access thre trail head from exactly?

  • @dnvnmrgn Thanks for watching and commenting! I used to go fishing with my grandparents in these same places you mentioned. S. Fork, Creede, and Del Norte are great places to go fishing in the R. Grande. There is only one way that I know of how to access the Three Forks area:

From Antonito, go West on CO Hwy 17 for 22 miles to Horca.

Turn right on Forest Service Road 250 - follow FR 250 for 23 miles to Platoro. (all dirt rd.)

Then another 4 miles on FR 250 to dead end at the Three Forks T.H.

  • What is this song? please

  • @MobFrenziedHomicide The music is as follows (in order of play):

"High On A Mountain" by Jackass Flats - Live @ The Jewish Mother 11-16-07

    "Tolen" by Jean Michel Cazoria

"Tell It To The Banjo" by Angel Ruiz

  • THIS ROCKS!! I love ur videos. & the music u use just goes so well w ur video style. It's both beautiful & playful. This country looks familiar. I'm missing getting out to many places as we have had the worst fire in history in our area. Dang!! All trails have been closed. Hope to get rain so they will open again. My feet are getting itchy to do a barefoot hike!! LOL! :) Thank you for a stupendous video!! You really do a great job. I smile all the way through your videos; they are SO COOL!! :)

  • Good info. Thanks, Billy Bob.

  • @JD03ish Thanks for watching! We saw 1 group of people who were using pack mules to get to Blue Lake. I aclimate to elevation very quickly as I live at 5,000 FT and often go hiking in elevations between 8,000 FT and 11,000 FT. I would camp at the Platoro Reservoir Campground for 1 night before hiking into the wilderness to aclimate properly. I appreciate the Billy Bob Thorton compairison too... thats awesome! :-D
