At 1030 today, the Irish Taoiseach delivered his annual speech on Ireland's views on global issues; to an audience of politicians and journalists in Washington. However he seemed to struggle to develop any interesting points, going randomly from one topic to the next.
He began by entertaining the audience, cracking jokes about Tony Blair. Given this speech was an incredibly important opportunity for Ahern to influence those in Washington, it seemed bizarre that he persued with 'babyish' jokes, at one point making himself laugh, just by saying 'Tony Blair'.
Realising his minutes were running out he turned attention to more pressing matters. Straggly though, with the pressure obviously getting to him, he chose to focus on the seemingly irrelevant French bi-elections.
The crowd gave sympathetic applause after the Taoiseach shared his philosophy, 'you can't solve a conflict... by causing the conflict'. Many in the front row were smirking by now.
Ahern continued with his ideas for America's situation in Afghanistan, stating 'if you look at the Middle East today, you have to sit on the fence', immediately afterwords, contradicting himself, he said 'you have to engage'.
He tried to restore some credibility, claiming that he was active in Middle Eastern politics, an outlandish suggestion from the leader of a neutral state. Ahern claimed that Ireland had considered waging war in the Middle East, 'we were almost there'.
The announcer (along with everybody else) had had enough and forced Ahern from the stage.
