When producer Ian Nagoski started collecting the 78's that make up "To What Strange Place," he initially thought he was collecting music of the former Ottoman Empire recorded in Greece, Turkey, and Syria. What he learned instead was that he was collecting some of the earliest recordings made in America -- until now almost completely forgotten.

This short film explores Nagoski's search for the lives behind the music of "To What Strange Place," and what his search says about his own need to reclaim these lost voices from obscurity.

  • •Wonderful ...keep up the good work!

  • @ridif : What synagogue? Romaniote synagogue.

  • the oldest WHAT synagogue in the Western Hemisphere?.. Great work.. great music.. I think the author and his film persona is a bit too showcased .but am glad this music exists at least !

  • Great short film on 78's! I hope you'll enjoy the ones I post on my channel.

  • This is amazing.

  • This really is amazing! Thank you very much Ian for saving the cultural treasures!

  • This is so cool I enjoyed watching it. Thanks

  • I am a fan of old ethnic music from 78 , especially old Turkish music and have quite a collection of this kind of music on cd and am definitely going to add the 3 cd 'To What Strange Place' to my collection. I hope Ian will compile lots more of music from 78s and release them. And I also like Marika Papagika whom he mentions in this film. So much of early recordings of ethnic music from around the world are unknown and lost, and thanks to guys like Ian, this timeless music is being preserved.
