The British Columbia Regiment Band (Vancouver, Canada) visited Holland from 2005 April 29 - May 10. A committee of Dutch citizens in Holland organized the tour under the "Welcome Again Veterans" program marking the 60th Anniversary of the Liberation of Holland. The 30-member group from Vancouver billeted with Dutch host families in Goor, NL (in Eastern Holland, near the border with Germany.)

During the 12 days of the tour, the band played numerous performances in the area surrounding Goor and attended memorial ceremonies at the Canadian War Cemeteries in Groesbeek and Holten. A tour highlight was marching and playing in the veterans parade at Apeldoorn, together with a contingent of serving members of The British Columbia Regiment (DCO), and surrounded by over 200,000 enthusiastic spectators.

This video shows a 4 min. 09 sec. clip from the Apeldoorn parade. It was taken from a Dutch national TV broadcast. The commentary on the sound track is in Dutch, except for the interviews with Canadian veterans (in English, with Dutch subtitles.) The Dutch spectators were quite familiar with the march, "State Centre", and you will see them singing and dancing along with it. As Drum Major Evan MacNeil salutes Governor General Adrienne Clarkson and Netherlands Princess Margriet on the Reviewing Stand, you will hear the band playing its regimental march, "I'm Ninety-Five".

  • I saw a photo once of the officers of the BC Regiment taken in 1941 in England. I think it was all the officers at that time....the photo showed around half not serviving the war....terrible price paid by these men. I can't think of any any other nation, like Holland, who still show this much appreciation of foreigner who had come to help liberate them. Holland is a wonderful country, I am glad that we (Canadians) could help them in their time of need.

  • Duncan....get in step!!!

    Up The Dukes!!

  • Gosh darn those Dukes sure look good!

  • My grandfather was part of the liberation force; he attended this event in 1995.

  • Wonderful, two great nations linked in a common history from Queen Wilhelmina in Ottawa to Canadian troops liberating The Netherlands. We are also proud of our Canadian cousin of Dutch heritage that has served Canada in Afghanistan.
