The Ryukin is so named because it was said to have arrived in Japan through the Ryukyu Islands that lie between Taiwan and Japan.

References to this variety date back to 1833, but it is said to arrive in Japan in the 1770s.

In early texts it is also called Onaga(Long Tail) and Nagasaki, probably because many foreign objects entered Japan through Nagasaki at this period. It is one of the most popular variety in Japan, and has been highly developed there.

The Japanese Ryukin has a pointed head and a deep body with a pronounced hump behind the head. The dorsal fin is high. Preferred colours are red and red-and-white. Ryukins have very deep red colouring. They can reach a size of 8 inches(as shown in clip).
