Are there rules in social media?

Are there rules in social media? That's the question that needs answered. Should someone be able to dictate to you how to use Twitter and Facebook? Or should you just be able to use them how you wish?

There are no rules by the dictionary definition of the word, but there are suggestions and best practices, same as for blogs, web sites, email, facebook and everything else. As you said, it is not okay to spam when emailing. It is also not okay to spam when using social media. The people (anyone besides Sam?) giving you what you define as "rules" are offering opinions. I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill.

Perhaps. But why is it that every day I read a post or Tweet from someone saying that "people shouldn't be doing this, or doing that". And I'm not saying spamming. They're saying that people should use twitter for marketing, or for self-promotion, etc... Those are the "rules" I'm talking about.

No, I don't believe that social media has rules and I don't think rules should be imposed upon users. Social media should be as varied as the people using it. If you don't like a service, don't use it.

because they're like little kids on the playground: they can't "win" unless it's by their "rules". :) they're (the software/sites) are just tools, like a computer. I'm betting there was a lot of people saying computers shouldn't be used for games years ago. :)

I guess I don't see too many with too extreme of a viewpoint because all the people I follow and follow me are in the self-promotion biz - affiliates or print on demand folks generally. Most of the complaints I see, say about autoresponders, aren't people trying to make rules, just voicing their opinions about 'em. I dunno. You know, you should do a debate - podcast or live stream with a moderator and such. You and someone on one side, maybe Sam and someone else on the other. Fun :D
