July 2, 1987 Interview on GMA With Jim & Tammy Bakker

Jim & Tammy Bakker sat down with Charles Gibson of Good Morning America in July 1987 for this interview. The date in the bottom left corner at 4:59 says July 2, but Gibson says he conducted the interview "last night", meaning July 1st.

I found Gibson's line of questioning fairly one-sided. Some of his questions were posed with a smart-aleck tone, such as when he asks at 3:01, "There are stories about cars and jewelry and clothes and houses and whatever... What happened to it?"

Towards the end of this video, Melvin Belli is metioned, and I have uploaded that video as well.

I am a Christian- I must resist the urge to put my hands around the necks of "people" like this and squeeze . I do not know if they ever repented (the weird chick before she died) for the gold plated bathroom fixtures and all of the other horrendous crap they did to drag the name of God through the sewer. The spirit of God within me hopes they have repented. I can't believe there are people posting here defending what these monsters did.

@adbartels- Please recheck your facts.... there never were gold-plated bathroom fixtures. The fixtures seen and reported on were none other than ordinary brass-colored fixtures available in any home improvement store in any town across the US. And Tammy Faye, the "weird chick" was the most incredible, most loving person that ever walked this earth. Unless you have ever met her, or been to Heritage USA, you are in no position to judge. Let he who is without sin to cast the first stone.

Corruption? Perhaps. But if that were the case, why wasn't he convicted on corruption charges? Why was Jim released from prison early? Why is he back on TV NOW?

Doesn't make sense, does it? If he were as corrupt as everyone thinks, would he even be let back on TV?

Poor Tammy says in this video that she and Jim have never put money first then swore to God that she never did. Then Jim proceeds to say that his salary was ONLY 500k the year before. Then Tammy talks about how she buys clothes and wears them only once then gets rid of them. Jim then goes on to say that an investigation would be the best thing to happen to him and history will prove that the Bakers were "HONEST PEOPLE". He then quotes the bible some more. Jim Baker makes me sick, always has.

@CincinnatiGifts Well, being sentenced to 45 years and a 500,000$ and then only serving less then five years seems corrupt to me. 8 counts of mail fraud, 15 counts of wire fraud, and one count of conspiracy. That is fucked up.

1."(the weird chick...)" -- nice 'Christian' talk there (sarcasm). 2. You did not know the Bakkers. I am currently involved in a production where I am playing the role of Jim Bakker, and the writers of the show met personally with Tammy Faye. The 'Gold' plated fixtures -- were BRASS. The 'dog house' was actually heated by an old discarded heater that Jim paid for with his own money because he felt sorry for the dogs. The media blew it out of proportion. Know the facts first.
