Vice Mayor of Long Beach, CA Suja Lowenthal, discusses the growing economic costs of collection and disposal of plastic - the externalized costs of plastic pollution
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local,
self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like
experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine
to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local,
self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently
organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for
the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

can the systems that collect trash be used to recycle, seperate and sell on the resources collected to make this process self funding?

@monkeysam361, retain means to hold on to or keep, not leave. She is saying hold on to you trash and throw it away in the correct place or reuse it, not leave it on the beach or throw it out your car window.

Very interesting talk. I like that she's complaining on our behalf on how much we're spending on END-OF-PIPE solutions to waste management. People need to hear how many millions of their dollars are being spent on cleaning up after themselves. THIS CAN CHANGE DRASTICALLY if we quash our single-use, disposable culture.

In answer to your question, yes, you are most certainly wrong. Suja Lowenthal is very committed to the environment in Long Beach and surrounds and has spent a great deal of time using her position as Council member of District #2 (not mayor, wrong again) to draw attention and make incremental corrections to the damage caused by both the L.A. and San Gabriel rivers terminating their flow into Long Beach Harbor. Get your facts straight before you make remarks please.

Wow, Monkeysam361, you listened to an 18+ minute video (or maybe you didn't) and key on one sentence, take it out of context, and come up with THAT comment? Wow.

Monkeysam361, with respect, I have no idea how you can think any of what she said reflects a lack of care for the city. For myself, this is close to my heart, I ride up the Ballona Creek bike path in LA daily and after even minor rain storms, the plastic and polystyrene trash build up is seriously shocking. Equally shocking are the plastic bags that tile the beach. Go for a walk and take a look sometime. Makes you think twice about every bag or cup you use - that's where the solution starts.
