There are several ways to improve foot strength, and foot drive. Being lighter on your feet is often a positional and postural technique, but it can be aided by training your lower body. Finding your weakest link whether it is your hips, hamstrings, quads, feet, or ankles is the first step. Then incorporate training drills to improve those areas. A great way to increase foot strength is by simply picking up packing peanuts or marbles with your toes and placing them in a bucket for two to three minutes a day. Running in sand is another great alternative.
Exercises:
• Sled push low grip: During the sled push you are trying to keep your hips low and drive you feet into the ground. The only way to move the sled effectively is to drive the balls of your feet into the ground as hard as possible. If your hips elevate then you will begin to push the sled into the ground, and not across the ground, defeating the purpose of the exercise.
• Ladder drill: This drill is the icky shuffle. Clearly to perform this agility drill effectively you have to be light on your feet, constantly propelling the body forward, while keeping the upper body centered over the ladder. This is one of many speed ladder drills that can develop quick, light feet.
• Moving marbles for 2-3 minutes
• Running in sand is another great way to strengthen your feet
