this song was sung at my father's funeral a few months ago. it was also sung at the funerals of my aunt, uncle and grandmother. it is a negro spiritual but it's beautiful to see a white southern church embrace it and do a wonderful job. elvis would have loved it too.
This song was written by an ex slave. The irony is that many white racists sing this song and don't even know that the writer was expressing the plight of black people just out of slavery.
