Can u discharge a cap w any screwdeiver

looking forward to seeing a video diagnosing bad suction valve r22 heat pump or at least your experince on problems causing high suction pressure like 105 at 100 outside 10 degree split ra v's supply

Mathematically if dt was 0, the capacitor current 'i' would be infinite. This is not mathematically possible or physically possible (which is why we can't divide by 0). If dt was very small, it would mean the capacitors energy would be discharged very quickly. This would most likely damage the capacitor, with a loud bang.

@allanvandyke more fun, and if dt was 0 it would be i = CdV/0, can't divide anything by 0 AYYYYYYY

You definately don't discharge a capacitor with a screwdriver, you will be asking for trouble. The current through a capacitor is i = CdV/dt. Discharging with a screwdriver gives a complete short across the terminals, meaning dt is zero. If dt is zero, the equation makes i very large. In a large capacitor like the one shown, a short circuit across the capacitor discharge all its energy very quickly, possibly exploding. All capacitors should be dischagred slowly.
Question DrZ! : I have always replaced caps with matching mfds. However, I was told that I could go up a small amount (like from a 30 mfd to 35 mfd) and all will be ok. What are your thoughts and what would be the affects to the compressor or fan?

@javemusic You might be able to get away with going up a little. I wouldn't.

@metusa666 Thanks.

Shouldn't you really use a 20,000 ohm resistor to discharge a capacitor?

@70fixitman You could.
