http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/ Tooth powders can be used instead of toothpaste for brushing teeth. This recipe from Heather Nic an Fhleisdeir of the Academy of Scottish Herbalism uses sea salt, kaolin clay, baking soda, spearmint essential oil and dried sage.

  • it seems easier to make than buy it!! i suppose if you want to make a paste you add water right??

  • @tatulover01 You can mix vegetable glycerin and aloe gel with the powder to make a nice paste. Just keep adding until you reach your desired consistency. Thanks for the great question! ~Erin

  • I used this powder for a year, and it was too abrasive. I ended up at the dentist with worn down enamel! This is great, for maybe a weekly brush, but I don't think a daily polish is a good idea. Just wanted to pass my experience along!

  • @mountainroseherbs do you need any preservative if you add vegetable glycerin and aloe gel? If not, what is the shelf life to both the powder and paste? Thanks

  • Should a pregnant/nursing woman omit the sage?

  • THANK YOU FOR THIS GREAT VIDEO, I HAD BEING LOKING FOR WHITE CLAY HERE IN PUERTO RICO, BUT A GAVE UP. CAN I SUBSTITUTE THE CLAY FOR ANOTHER INGREDIENT? I DON'T WANT TO USE COMMERCIAL TOOTHPASTE ANYMORE

  • I've made homemade toothpaste and homemade tooth powders, and I must say that I like the powders A LOT more! Thanks for sharing this recipe, it looks stellar! Can't wait to try it! :)

oh, and I've heard that a great way to whiten teeth once in a while is to swish peroxide in your mouth... Seems like a good method to use once in a while for stubborn coffee/tea stains...

  • Can I substitute Bentonite clay for the kaolin?

  • What do I do about bad breath? I can't use traditional tooth pastes and mouth washes because of the mint flavoring.

  • Regualr toothpaste has always burned my mouth...even my lips and tounge. I tried brushing teeth with Dial soap once and I was surprised that it did not burn as much as the toothpaste. The minty flavors always made me sick. I LOVE to drink coke...but I hate the texture it leaves on my teeth. Traditional toothpaste just gets stuck on it while baking soda removes it. My teeth have never felt clean with regualr toothpaste. Floride is actualy very dangerous.

  • @mountainroseherbs glycerin coats teeth and hurts the gums...aloe is better.

  • May I do a blog post on my website with your video on making tooth powder? I will reference your website in getting the ingredients! I love your stuff.
