You make hafez alassad seem like a hero which is the furthest from truth . In his times some Sunnis were imprisoned or even executed for being too educated . One of my far relatives was taken from the street when he was 15 in the eighties and two decades later he was returned to his family a dead body in a black plastic bag . Hafez alassad was the shittiest thing that ever happened to Syria and the whole region .

It's important to remember though that now lots of the rebels who may have originally been pro-democracy have become muddled with al-Qaeda fighters and these protesters don't support democracy. If the US/UN intervenes more in Syria (Cameron from the UK just today has been meeting with Putin to discuss this!) then we'd have to ensure that in getting rid of Assad a stable democracy not taken over by the Muslim Brotherood/other Political Islamist organisations as has happened in, say, Egypt.
