Michael Mann is a professor in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, a climatologist, and the director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State University. Michael is best known for his extensive background and research in the field of paleoclimatology. This work led to Michael's graph of temperature trends over the last thousand years, popularly coined as the "hockey stick graph" because of its resemblance to the sporting equipment. The graph has received acclaim and criticism since its publishing. He has received many awards and honors including, but not limited to, the Outstanding Scientific Paper Award by NOAA in 2002 and also was named one of the 50 Leading Visionaries in Science and Technology by Scientific American. Michael is also one of the founders of RealClimate.org, a highly acclaimed climate science website that was chosen in 2005 as one of the top 25 "Science and Technology" websites by Scientific American and as one of the top 15 "green" websites by Time Magazine in 2008. Michael's educational background includes an M.S. degree in Physics from Yale, and a Ph.D. in Geology & Geophysics from Yale.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  • Michael Mann is the poster boy for BAD Science. He has been criticized and proven wrong so many times by his peers and yet he is allowed to promote his flawed and incorrect views on AGW. He is a total fraud and has been exposed as such and it is a disgrace to see that TED has invited him to be a speaker. I would like to see TED invite a speaker who has an opposite view on AGW since Mann never allows other scientists who are critical of his findings to be heard at IPCC meetings. Disgusting liar.

  • People like Cuccinelli don't stop when they lose a skirmish or even a major battle. They just quietly regroup and keep coming at you. Cuccinelli aspires to higher political office than state AG, and this is how he is making a name for himself.

Watch your back, Dr. Mann. These people are vicious, and they never stop.

  • @MrCoffeeFiend No, the GWPF carefully covers their tracks and takes donations from "anonymous donors."

  • @MrCoffeeFiend That's not what I said. I said this PROVES that the FF industry is funding climate denial. There are dozens of "think tanks" similar to Heartland out there. In fact, Heartland is one of the smaller ones. Take the $14 million that Heartland has received and multiply it by, say, about 15 or 20 to get a reading on how much is being spent to undermine climate science. Say, roughly a quarter billion spent on anti-science.
