I was asked to write a song about subordinate clauses that would give the basic principles of fragments, main clauses and the use of specific time and qualitative connectives to a group of Y6 children, and this is what I came up with.
It will be added to the other songs that I have written for a CD called "Writing for a porpoise", a collection of songs about writing and parts of grammar including; "The apostrophe catastrophe blues", "Oh dear what can the metaphore be?" and "I like to write right."

Don't get Vexed by Tony Wilson

A subordinate clause can't stand alone
because it won't make sense
A fragment leaves you wondering what happened next?

Dont get vexed if your sentence's complex
AFTER and ALTHOUGH
He became the president after he returned home
Most powerful man in the country although he felt alone

Dont get vexed if your sentence's complex
BECAUSE and BEFORE
She was always happy because she could call his name
Their lives had been so hard
before the warm, spring rain

Dont get vexed if your sentence's complex
WHEN and WHERE
They all knew joy and comfort
when the war reached an end
They could have peace in their lives
where hearts could mend

I have tried to use as many personal pronouns as I could and I have placed the connectives in a sort of alphabetical order. I have tried to write two line verses/sentences that portray a much bigger story and I am hoping to get the children to use them to develop a full, creative story to make a link between verse and prose. Anything that I can do to try and get the children to remember what is needed to produce their best writing.

  • Thanks for that. It's always good to know that it is being used by other schools and teaching profesionals. I have actually put the words on the information about the song. Thanks again Tony

  • This would be a great teaching tool if you had visuals to go with it. Even the words for students to follow would be a great help!

    It's a great song! I love it.
