Meet a Canadian farm couple who raise ostrich. Discover why they like this unique type of farming.
Transcript:
Deb-We have been farming now for about 12 years. We have previously owned two other businesses but now we ostrich-farm full time and we really enjoy working with the birds because all the products are used.
Don- Ostrich have one of the highest immune systems of any animal in the world and that's another reason why we are really interested in ostrich and it therefore makes the meat itself a lot more healthier. It's very low on fat, very low in cholesterol and it's a red meat.
The eggs are taken from the breeders, stored in a refrigerator for about five days, and then the eggs are set out the night before they are to go in the incubator and they go into the incubator then for a period of 38 days, from which case at that time they are moved to the hatcher and they hatch out in the next four days. We start hatching from June approximately right through sometimes until September/October. We hatch out probably about 125 birds a year and we keep about 20, 25 breeder birds so we can run as many as 150 birds at one time.
Deb-And as you can see they do have a bit of personality. They are very curious at this age. They like to explore so we don't suggest you wear your glasses or you have jewelry on and you're too close to them as they will try to take it off.
