Using insulin to control your diabetes is a big decision. It is important to realize that just because an insulin is the 'latest' available - it may not be the 'greatest' choice for you.

  • I use the regular insulin in my pump. I am 100% certain that the 'faster acting insulin' is only designed to keep patents fresh and revenue stream exclusive to a company. They are no better, scientifically-proven, to offer any benefit to a person with diabetes. Human insulin in non-diabetics works at the same speed of regular insulin. Super-human speed possibly accounts for the exponential rise is hypoglycemic unawareness since the advent of 'faster acting insulin'.

  • There isn't any after-meal spike in bG. In fact - I'd say that sugars stay pretty level after meals. The duration of regular insulin has a longer duration so it seems to work well for me. Thanks for commenting!

  • I used pork Regular (Hypurin) imported from the UK by way of Canada from May 2007 until May 2011. At $135 per bottle - the $5 copay for Humulin R is just as good! It's the fast-acting insulins that 'outpace' my metabolism and I end-up taking A TON more insulin than my body can handle. Just sayin'

  • I agree 100%! The ADA diet requires a 50:50 ratio of basal:bolus insulin but low-carb (natural carb eating) is more like 65:35 ratio.

  • Allie, I've been wondering too about the "effects" of the faster acting insulins. I understand they are now working on even faster acting insulins! My question is: are you using the regular in your pump or have you gone back to shots?

  • im on lantus 5 small shots a day and lantus 12 morn 12 night.i still want beef and pork, but its very difficult to get,the insulin now is made very cheap so no going back.unless all diabetics ask for it,then it will become available.

we have strong numbers but no one speaks out.maybe the diabetic associations will hand over there billion dollar money laundering business of giving out papers with old medical info.nothings changed in the 36 yrs ive been taking insulin!!!

  • @Vokus Hey friend, makes me sad to hear this. I was also an active, healthy person who loved life and then -BAM! Diabetic at 19. It was a hard age to get used to it because at that age people want to drink party etc. I was depressed and let my body fall to ruins, but one day I forced myself to 'pick myself up'. I started doing martial arts and became vegetarian and taking care of myself -and the results two years later is amazing. If you need to speak dont hesitate. There is hope, I swear!!!

  • What an interesting post Allie! Thanks for sharing your experiences - gives me something to think about! Do you notice any post-meal spikes because the Regular insulin supposedly takes longer to start working?

  • @seabulls69 So happy for you.

  • Wow. I can't tell you how interesting this was for me - thank you for sharing. I still read about older folks longing for the beef and pork insulins they used to make, I guess in Canada? I wonder about that too.

  • Novorapid and Levmir seems to be ok
