On November 30, 2009 an Elder began a courageous walk of hope to bring attention to the deplorable housing that exists on her First Nation community of Attawapiskat, located on the James Bay coast in Ontario Canada. Her walk was in response to the frustration that she and many other of her community members have encountered when dealing with the Canadian government in regards to obtain proper permanent living arrangements. Prior to her walk, and sadly likely after, her home is a hotel room in Cochrane from which she wants so desperately to leave in order to return to her home community to be close to her family. However, with that prospect in mind, she would have to be housed in portable housing unit supplied by the diamond conglomerate deBeers which she thinks absurd for a woman of her condition. Moreover, another option others have chosen, is to take up residence in tents for the winter and she has even considered that option!. To read more of the situation leading up to these events, please read stories at the links provide below!. Also, a facebook group exists " Attawapiskat - Making a stand for our Children & Elders" to find out how to help. Of foremost priority for the community is to urge Federal Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Minister, Charles (Chuck) Stahl to visit to see the situation firsthand. To date the Minister Stahl has declined despite local MP Charlie Angus asking him to do so. Read on to learn more...

What happen then, after Nov 30, 2009 ? Did Sophie Spencer get any response/help/support from the responsible people ? Why are there deplorable housing situations, to have a home, hospital and good shool for everyone, aren`t that human rights and in a rich country like Canada, there shouldn`t be issues like that. I am confused. This was totaly new for me and I need to check more. Thanks//Regina
