I hardly think it's ugly, in fact when you build a working 1/8th or 1/16th scale Live Steam model of one of these, you come to love the uniqueness as well as the appearance of the Shay. Take a look at Nelsons Locomotive Works on the Web to get a feel for models of these engines.

  • The Shay is a practical steam locomotive with plenty of room for both engineer and fireman; some coal-fired models had an optional pneumatic "butterfly" door for the firebox. Lima stayed with the proven Stevenson valve gear (as adapted by Ephraim Shay) to the last Class C built in 1944.

  • @Slickrick1853 well she's out of service being restored, so she'll look beautiful when she's done

  • I love the Truck Shay. It is by far the ugliest looking train ever created but its power, strenght and durablity/reliablity are hard to match.
