A friend of mine makes an attempt to start the Pratt & Whitney R-985 radial in a M.H. 1521 Broussard. The temperature is approx. -7 degrees celsius and the engine is rather reluctant to say the least...
But this is what life is like, when you enjoy flying with round engines!

NB! Sorry about the wrong aspect ratio. The video was originally filmed in 16:9 format and I could not figure out how to encode it into 4:3 for youtube.

  • where is the rudder?

  • There is no rudder at the fuselage center line. This aircraft got two stabilizers/rudders mounted on the tips of the horizontal stabilizer (like the B-25)

  • Ever started a P-51 Mustang, and heard it fly? That's a beautiful rolls royce merlin engine!! What kind of plane you got there?

  • I've been standing close by a Mustang that fires up, and of course there is nothing like a Merlin...

The aircraft in the video is a Max Holste MH.1521 Broussard built in France 1956.

  • Where exactly is this plane located?

I think I've seen one near Stockholm, Sweden where I live, on the airfield Skå-Edeby? Is that the one?

  • This aircraft (LN-WNB) is located at Kjeller airfield (Lillestrøm).

We used to have two Broussards in Norway (LN-WNA & LN-WNB).

LN-WNA was sold to Sweden a few years ago, but I am not sure where it is based.

  • The sound of a sleepy Radial Engine waking up, there simply is nothing like it in the world. I like how it sounds so grumpy and from there gets angry. I like that you have to work for it's co-operation rather then just press a button and I just generally like the engine.

  • That's a mighty fine way to sweep out the hangar :) Love that engine.

  • Me starting my car every morning for work....

  • Super cool video and comments :-)

  • best sound in the world

  • Beautiful! Love that sound!

  • thers just something about a radial that makes them so perfect. I lov radial planes

  • Radials are often like this on cold start!

  • Wow, what a rare airplane you have there. Sounds and looks amazing. Hope to see a video of you flying it soon.

  • A little bit reluctant, that engine. But a real nice video. And a very nice plane.
