You're making a false argument (I've seen Blunkett and Straw doing the same over the past week in the Guardian, and getting a good kicking for it too).
You all seem to imply that there is a need to trade off some liberty for some security. Yet no one can tell me exactly how ID cards, a universal database or CCTV will protect me from al-Qaida. I've heard it asserted often enough, but seen no actual evidence or even rational argument. But all of these certainly remove my right to privacy
