Hi,
While this could be used to pull nails; I believe it may have been intended to pull the U-shaped staples used to attach Barbed Wire to wooden fence posts. Those would have been very common on cattle ranches and farms, etc.

Thanks for the info. Other have told me it is a nail puller. Still, I find it a little odd the way it is supposed to work. Interesting piece.

You put the jaws over the nail head, slam the handle(slide)down wich will dig the jaws in and pry to the side.
