  • Mödl was not a "pushed" mezzo, but a mezzo who developped into a true soprano - that is a big difference! Her Isolde is glorious indeed.

  • Incredibly moving...

  • Interesting this, shows how important the intervening bits are--where Isolde heals Tristan, and then when Marke et al come in, in their grand 'interruption', vastly increasing the pace of the drama. To go straight from Tristan's death to Isolde's transfiguration is quite incorrect dramatically speaking it seems to me.

  • wow wow and wow. Mödl may be mezzo, but that last phrase alone set her up in the clouds with all the great Isoldes. My goodness. And Bernstein. Even at his young age here, what a command he had of that orchestration. The joy that always showed in his face when he conducted is here too. How we miss that today.

  • Fantastic performance

  • Thank you so much for sharing. My favourite Tristan is the live Bayreuth Mödl/Vinay/Karajan. So interesting to see and hear these wonderful singers with another conductor. Mödl does seem to drop the legato shortly before the end but that final note is incredibly beautiful.

  • ayabooon, where did you get theese?? Thank you so very much. This such a gift, a boon indeed for us singers to see and study.. bless you! The technique another thing then, made to care for the voice, which shows, whatever one's personal likes or dislikes re the various interpretations. So many forget that when he wrote these opera, the singers them AND Norma, coloratura. roles..because the voice wasn't hardened but singing in the resonances and renewed with each note.. He ho!

  • I remember Mödl at Bayreuth and Vienna. A great artist.
