Do you want to save hundreds to dollars a year? Well, consider mixing up your own homemade dishwashing detergent powder. It's quick, easy and cheap. Simply pick you the needed components at your local big box store and mix them according to the recipe. You'll be impressed how well this works!

1 box Borax (4lbs 12 oz or 76 oz ) (2.15 kg)

1 box Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (55 oz or 3 lbs 7 oz)

24 packages of unsweetened lemonade drink mix, like kool-aid. (**Note: lemonade will stain soap dispenser yellow, another option would be to use citric acid instead of lemonade.)

3 cups Epsom Salt

Lemi Shine rinse aid (this recipe does not work very well without it) You can find Lemi Shine in the dishwasher detergent isle at just about any store. You can also use vinegar as a rinse aid. If your dishes are coming out with spots on them that means you do need a rinse aid. I bought Lemi-Shine and just mixed it in with the recipe, and it works great like that.

Mix all together. We use one tablespoon in the soap cup and one tablespoon in the second wash flap.

  • what about the white film I have read about in other homemade dishwasher recipes? Any problems with that?

  • @gambrell104 We have well water with a higher than normal mineral content and haven't had any problems. The Lemi Shine is a rinse agent and helps prevent any spotting or streaking. The only problem we have had is that it lasts so long, that the powder start to cake up... so we have to "smack it" around a little.

  • One word mister.... TRIPOD. I couldn't even finish your video, it was so bouncy that I got an instant headache.

The recipe is good, you don't need the koolaid, you can use citric acid crystals instead (look by the canning supplies in the store).

  • you have your mix off on measurements. its one cup of boxax to one cup of supper washing soda to 1/2 cup of salt to 4 packs of cool aid. it takes 2 to 3 table spoons in machine.
