@ThePekkert Letterman was obviously in on the joke and they admired each other greatly. Letterman had him on his show more times than anybody (over 10 times) and Kaufman even signed his will in Dave's office shortly before his death.

I am not an Andy Kaufman fan but I think the "wreaks of McCarthy-ism" is a funny line.
