To clarify, we didn't keep some of the other chickens inside all the time, they had pens outdoors. Really it was only one who actually got to come inside at night or during bad weather. She was my first chicken (welsummer cross maybe) and she had what seem to be respiratory issues from a young age (got her from a petting zoo at the fair, but we don't do that anymore). She lived for 9 years.

What a silly little man.
I'd love to have a silkie hen for a pet. Currently have 2 cornish mixes (hen and rooster) that look more like turkeys or vultures than chickens. They're bat loony and aggressive, nothing like either of their parents (now passed on), who were also cornish mixes (the current rooster just looks a bit smaller than his father). They stay outside, no indoor time at all (except when they were born) unlike other clucks we've had.

Does your silkie permanantly reside indoors? What do you do about the poop? Do you keep him in a cage? He is very cute!
do they smell

Much less odor than a dog or cat; you can even give your Silkies baths with baby shampoo to keep them looking and smelling baby fresh! Seriously most odor comes from a dirty environment. You need to keep the area your birds spend time in clean. Silkies spend a lot of time preening their feathers and that keeps us very fresh.

Why, yes. Silkies make excellent house pets.
